-Princeton- Timothy W. Nortman, age 42, Princeton, was sentenced today in Gibson Circuit Court to four (4) years prison following his admission to stealing a handgun and violating a protective order. Nortman pled guilty to Theft, a Class D felony and was sentenced to the maximum term of (3) three years in the Indiana Department of Corrections. In addition, he pled guilty to Invasion of Privacy, a Class A misdemeanor and received the maximum 12 month sentence for that offense. The sentences will be served consecutively, meaning Nortman must serve (4) years in IDOC. On July 4, 2009 Oakland City Police Officer Michael Collins received a complaint from Nortman’s girlfriend at the time that Nortman was illegally in possession of a handgun. Collins responded to the scene and searched Nortman and his girlfriend’s residence, and found a .357 Ruger revolver underneath the dresser in the closet of the master bedroom. The handgun discovered by Collins had been reported stolen a few months beforehand by another Oakland City resident. Following turning in her boyfriend for the theft of the handgun, Nortman’s girlfriend petitioned the court to grant a protective order against Nortman. Judge Jeff Meade issued a Protective Order prohibiting Nortman from contacting his now ex-girlfriend effective until July 6, 2011. On August, 19, 2009 Oakland City Police Officer Gavin Brothers received a call from the ex-girlfriend reporting that Nortman had violated the protective order by instructing his sister to contact her on his behalf. Nortman’s sister gave the ex-girlfriend a copy of a letter, and she in turn gave a copy of it to Officer Brothers to place into evidence. Gibson County Prosecutor Robert Krieg stated that Nortman faced the possibility of additional charges for being in possession of a handgun by a felon, but that Nortman was willing to take maximum consecutive sentences rather than face the possibility of additional time. |
